Your News Seghill Annual Players Dinner

Rugby at Seghill came about almost by accident, though boredom during the 1921 coal stoppage was a contributary factor. So, in September 1921, having been accepted as junior members by Northumberland RFU, 15 Seghill men took to the field at the Grammar School Ground in Jesmond to play Old Novocastrian Third XV - and Seghill won!

One of the founding members who played in that opening game was 37 year old pit deputy, Joe Archbold. Now, 90 years on, as Seghill brought the curtain down on their 2010/11 season with their annual Players Dinner, Joe's family retain a presence at the club. Joe's 20 year old great grandson, Nick Heard, has come through the junior ranks to become a first team regular.

Players and club officials were joined by guest speakers Paul Richardson and Les Gutteridge to enjoy a lovely three course meal before getting down to the main event - the presentation of awards to the players who have had the main impact on the side this season.

Club President, Alex McLoughlin had the honour of presenting the awards.

The Deputies selected their powerhouse of a second row, David Norris, as their Player of the Season, and it was a clean sweep for the forwards, with Andy Brown as Young Player, and James Shaw as Most Improved Player.

With the first team, the forwards almost made it all the awards on the night. Prop, Rick Monaghan received the Players Player Award, hooker, Neil Renney received the Veterans Award, Second Row Andrew Stephenson was the Most Improved Player, while centre Liam Lonsdale was the sole back to win an award, taking the Young Player of the Year.

Deputies captain Frazer Hill was also honoured by the club for all his hard work both on the pitch and behind the scenes this season.

All these players thoroughly deserved their awards, though it must have been a difficult choice for all concerned, given the talent the club has in its ranks.

With this season barely over, plans are already underway for next season, with pre-season training begining on June 28th, and plans for the club tour are being formulated!
