It was all to play for at Merton Lane as Canterbury played host to Westcombe Park in a game that would result in relegation for the losing side. Both sides had

won two of their three previous games with Canterbury going into the game two points above their local rivals in the league table.

Canterbury started the brighter of the two sides and went into an 8-0 lead after half an hour thanks to a 60- metre try from Michael Melford and a penalty from

Will Hilton. Park then hit back with a try from Kieren Leeper, which was converted by Luke Giles, to bring them to within a point at the interval.

A penalty from Giles put them in front for the first time in the game in the 44th minute and further kicks were exchanged before Canterbury reclaimed the lead

through Peter Kelly’s try with 15 minutes left on the clock. Hilton again added the extras to make it 18-13.

However the game turned on its head in the 71st- minute when the home side lost their captain Chris Hinkins to the sin- bin. Park took full advantage of being

a man up to score two tries – one each for Craig Chadley and Tom Hockedy, plus a Giles conversion, to win 18-25 and keep their place in National Two

South next season at Canterbury’s expense.
