Your News Old Leamingtonians stage Help for Heroes weekend

WARWICKSHIRE club Old Leamingtonians will be staging their third Rugby for Heroes weekend on May 14 and 15 with profits going to the Help for Heroes forces charity, the Royal British Legion and the 11thExplosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment Families charity.

In the last two years Old Leamingtonians have raised more than 4,400 for Help for Heroes and other armed forces charities and this year they aim to beat that the total on a busy weekend of rugby, music and family attractions.

The Festival is being held in the memory of local Warwickshire soldiers, Private Joe Whittaker and Private Conrad Lewis, 4 PARA, who were both tragically lost in Helmand Province in 2008 and 2011 respectively.

Jeremy Wright, Conservative MP for Kenilworth and Southam, will officially open the Festival at 12.15pm on May 14 followed by a display by the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment Tigers Parachute Display Team at 12.30pm and the British Legion Service of Remembrance at 1.15pm.

The charity rugby match will kick off at 1.30pm and will again feature celebrity player Monty Halls, Help for Heroes Patron, writer, explorer, TV presenter and motivational speaker.

Halls is a former Royal Marines officer and since leaving the services in 1996 he has worked in some of the most demanding environments on earth, won Channel Fours Superhuman, and presented series and documentaries for the Discovery Channel, The National Geographic Channel, BBC1, BBC2, Channel 4, and the History Channel.

In addition to playing at Old Leamingtonians he will also be doing a charity photo call and signing copies of his new book.

There will also be Mens and Ladies 10s Rugby tournaments, including guest appearances by British Army and Touring sides from around the UK, on May 14 and a short Remembrance service, led by the Warwick Branch of the Royal British Legion and officiated by Canon Roger Spiller, of the Diocese of Coventry.

Events on May 15 include a mini rugby festival, an Under 15s tag tournament, a girls tag rugby tournament and a senior rugby invitational 15-a-side exhibition match between the Warwickshire Society of Referees and a South Warwickshire Presidents XV

There will also be charity and rugby apparel stalls, a beer tent, a festival campsite and evening entertainment from the Kel Elliott Band, rock cover band Whytehouse and The Sambassadors of Groove!

Festival tickets are 5 for 18+ adults for the whole weekend, or 3 for Sunday only (including car parking) - Under 18s will go free.
