Your News East Yorkshire summer touch rugby programme

SUMMER Sevens touch rugby is a rapidly expanding sector of rugby union and across the country opportunities to take part in one of the more social elements of the game are being offered to existing players and newcomers wanting to try the game.

In East Yorkshire that provision is as strong as anywhere in the country, with four different venues in place to offer touch rugby for a month in May and June.

Deadline for entries into the first-up league at Hull RUFC is Friday (May 6) and that competition will run from May 18 to July 6.

Driffield need entries to be in by May 13, with the competition at Kelleythorpe running from May 23 to June 27.

May 13 is also the closing date for entries for the competitions at Malton & Norton (May 24/June 28) and Scarborough (May 26/June 30).

The competitions will run on mid-week evenings from 6.30/8.30 pm, with the first session at each venue being used to ‘seed’ teams and players to ensure that players of a similar standard are playing against each other.

“It’s a great way to keep fit during the summer and continue to practice handling and evasion skills in a more leisurely environment,” says Patrick Tasker from the RFU: “There will, of course, be the obligatory barbeque and prize presentation and I’m sure everyone who takes part will have lots of fun.

“This social section of rugby union, along with beach rugby, tag, sevens and 10s, is being strongly promoted by the RFU and East Yorkshire is very much involved in that increasingly popular side of the game.”
