DODWORTH St Johns and Birkwood Primary Schools led the way when an RFU YAZOO Regional Tag Rugby Festival was held in Barnsley recently.

The event, attended by 16 schools from the surrounding area, took place at Barnsley RUFCs Shaw Lane headquarters, with St Johns finishing in top spot and Birkwood as Runners-up. Both schools will now go forward to the South Yorkshire regional finals at Shaw Lane on June 9, 2011.

The festival is one of the highlights of an on-going campaign by the RFU & YAZOO Primary School Programme, designed to encourage the nations children to participate in sport and pursue healthier lifestyles and with every primary school in Barnsley having received coaching support ahead of the tournament, the total of youngsters being given the basics of tag rugby reached 1,000.

YAZOO and the RFU work in partnership with the national police childrens charity, Child Victims of Crime (CVOC), an initiative to keep children safe which started Tag 2 Twickenham in 2002. The charity funds the training of over 600 police staff a year to coach YAZOO Tag Rugby in primary schools.

The winning team and the runners up from the Tag 2 Twickenham Final, held at Rugby School, will have the chance to play against each other during the half-time interval of an RBS 6 Nations fixture at Twickenham in 2012.

In the last two years alone YAZOO, the RFU and CVOC have brought Tag Rugby to nearly two million children as well as donating balls, tag belts and other equipment to thousands of schools across the country. The Tag 2 Twickenham rugby finals have been running for the past eight years and it is now one of the biggest primary school events of its kind in the country.
