‘Yatton Colts blast through to their 2nd Final this Season’

Players and spectators alike never expected the Mediterranean heat of 25c at the 7.00pm Kick-off on Thursday evening in mid April. Puffs of dusty sand flew up when high clearance kicks were allowed to bounce, on the rare occasion, the pitch not having seen rain for a good few weeks, Mother Nature mocking the expensive drainage system installed last summer!

Yatton opened the scoring with their only penalty conversion after 3 minutes. But St Marys were determined that the home side and League Champions were not going to have it all their own way. Although the visitors penalty conversion attempt minutes later flew wide it was quickly followed up by a touchline break from halfway with the flying winger handing off three or four tackles to touchdown.

But St Marys points advantage did not last for long as the largely experienced Yatton side found their rhythm and three tries were clocked up during the second quarter, each being grounded by a player from the pack with the first try being converted. The points tally turning around at 20-5.

Although Yatton were down the slope, in St Marys half, for the first ten minutes of the second half they could not gather points and it was a St Marys break out up field which gave them the opportunity for their beefy player to come bull-dozing through to ground the ball after fifteen minutes from the break.

With some of the heat taking its toll replacements added fresh legs, after Yatton’s penalty conversion had screwed wide, and the League Champions were soon back in the oppositions half.

Two more unconverted tries secured the victory, the fourth being a scrum- half’s breakthrough in open play and the last, fittingly, by Yatton’s Hooker to book his side’s place in the Final.

It has now been confirmed that the Final in these Colts Bristol Championship Play-offs will be held at Broad Plain RFC, Kick-off 2pm Sunday 1st May when Yatton Colts meet Bath Colts once again.

And then the following

Sunday 8th May at Bridgwater, kick-off 3-00pm, Yatton Colts taken on the holders Weston Hornets Colts in the Final of the Colts Somerset Cup.
