Your News Selby under 16 22 - 12 Rishworthians under 16

Match report Sunday 14th September Friendly

After last weeks wash out Rishworthians under 16's were back in action with a visit to Selby who were losing quarter finalists in last season's Yorkshire cup. There were a few team changes from their first games two weeks ago. In the front row Michael Oswin moved to hooker to replace Danny Mitchell. In the back row Nathan Farnell and Danny Murgatroyd replaced wing forwards Watkins and Zientek. In the backs Matthew Hunt-Brown moved to stand off, Josh Ferguson and Ryan Percival made a new centre partnership with Connor Birkett and Josh Lowther on the wings.

In near perfect conditions the game kicked off and Selby went straight onto the offensive breaking into the Rishworthian 22 with a fine break from their backs who looked sharp. Rishworthians defended their lines well but after 10 minutes play Selby's strong forwards found a chink in the Rishworthian defence to burst through and score an unconverted try.

From the restart Rishworthians came more into the game with some good forward pick up and drives to move upfield into the Selby 22 and put the home side under pressure. However Selby forced a turn over ball and their scrum half quickly fed the ball out to his pacey backs and score a fine break away try which was converted to give the home side a 12-0 lead.

Again from the restart Rishworthians took the game to Selby with some good breaks from our back line with Ran Percival and Josh Ferguson using their pace to gain good ground. The forwards started work more as a unit supporting the ball carrier and recycling possession at the breakdown. Just before half time Rishworthians opened their account. From a forward drive into the Selby 22 scrum half Hudson fed his backs and centre Josh Ferguson used his pace and strength to power over for a try converted by Matthew Cook.

Half time Selby 12 - 7 Rishworthians

Rishworthians fired up by a half time team talk drove deep into the Selby half with the forwards putting together some good phases of play. The Selby defence was put under extreme pressure and eventually cracked. From a good forward drive Rishworthians reached the Selby 22 and having sucked in their forwards scrum half Hudson spun a quick ball out to is backs who combined well and Ferguson found space to dive over for a try wide out. Cook was just wide with his conversion attempt to leave the score at 12-12.

Rishworthians now had their tails up and threatened the Selby line several times with some good running from their backs but a resolute Selby defence stood firm. The game was then stopped for a while to attend to Danny Murgatroyd who had to leave the field with a bad cut. Rishworthians had to reshuffle the team and this seemed to disrupt Rishworthians play and allowed Selby to come back into the game with two quick unconverted tries and take a 22-12 lead. With just 10 minutes to go Rishworthians put Selby under pressure again as they pinned them back in their own 22. Several good drives were held short of the line but the well organised Selby defence could not be breached and held out to the final whistle.

This was an excellent performance for the under 16's, in only their second game taking on a strong Selby side and holding them 12-12 for the majority of the game and only a lapse in concentration allowed Selby in for 2 tries and victory.
