Kesteven opened their league campaign against Market Rasen on Saturday in perfect conditions.

After an impeccably observed minute's silence in memory of Jason Wills, Kesteven kicked off but conceded ground early on. The visitors created good attacking positions but teh home defence held until the 20th minute when the Rasen left wing squeezed over in the corner for the first try. K's still found it difficult to break out of their own half and conceded two converted tries before half time, to turn round 19 - 0 down.

K's brought on Rob Cooper and Andy Peabody for Andy Brown and Mark Sayle at the start of the second half. They came more into the game, but is was the visitors who added to their score with an unconverted try in the corner. K's did get points on theh board with the first of two long range penalties from Dan Turner but Market Rasen finished strongly with 3 more tries, two of which were converted to giev them a comfortable win by 43 points to 6.

For Kesteven Rupert Jordan and Hallam O'Brien posed a threat with their speed in the backs while Tony Woolerton led a strong defensive effort. In the pack Tom Harron played well and Doug Hayward was settling into his new role as hooker. Dan Turner was once again outstanding and tried so hard to turn the tide. Market Rasen however was a strong side and were worthy winners.

Kesteven side was B Betts; W Price, H O'Brien, T Woolerton, R Jordan; M Harland, D Turner; P Shileds, D Hayward, M Paton, J Kmieciak, T Harron, J Hughes, A Brown, M Sayle. Replacememts, R Cooper, A Peabody, D Epton.

The 2nds started slowly and were up against a strong side. The damage was done by the nimble Market Rasen backs who took the game by the scruff of the neck early annd had the game won by half time. They scored 4 tries in the first half to lead 24 - 0.

In the 2nd half the Kesteven forwards got on top and made more of a match of it. Andy Pearsey scored K's try, converted by Andy Price, but the fact that K's had no replacements meant that the 15 who started had to work through the match and not surprisingly they tired towards the end. The home side then ran in three more tries to finish the match winners by 43 - 7.

Team was G Purvis, B login, S Odams, C Foster, M Sayle, A Pearsey, T Miles, R Dolan; S Oakes, C Dingley, D Ward, M Dent, A Price,D Blackley, R Windsor,

Note that the minute's silence in memory of Jason Wills was well observed by both sides at Market Rasen.

K's travelled with 14 players and Rasen kindly lent us a new player to their club (Ricky previously of Grimsby RFC who played full back for us) We scored first early on through a Tom Price penalty following a ruck infringement by Rasen. We had a lot ot possession and territory in the first half but they scored a breakaway try to take a 5-3 lead. We then lost James Cheetham to a leg injury reducing our numbers to 14 and then fell further behind when Rasen took advantage of the new ELV concerning taking a quick line out to a player standing behind the thrower leading to them scoring a converted try to take a 12-3 lead. We then had the best of the next fifteen minutes of so leading to Richard Midgely scoring under the posts following a typically abrasive run through several missed tackles (Midge made a number of similar runs throughout the match). Tom Price scored and we trailed 12-10. Just on the stroke of half time as we pressed their line we thought that one of their players had knocked on. We stopped waiting for the ref's decision which didn't come and they ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts for a converted try. So the moral is - play to the whistle.

At 17-10 down at half time in a fairly even game we thought we had a good chance. However, we started the second half asleep and within about five minutes conceded two sloppy tries as a result of poor tackling (one of which was converted) to give Rasen a 29-10 lead. We then rallied and had some good territory and possession but then lost Tom Price to a knee injury leaving us with only 13 on the field. Despite this we put together a good move in the backs resulting in Ricky from Grimsby going over in the corner. The conversion was missed and Rasen now led 29-15. We then lost our loaned player Ricky to a rib injury leaving us with 12 against 15 and in the last ten minutes of the game were chasing shadows as Rasen ran in two more tries (one of which they converted) to give them a 41-15 win. But great credit to all the guys who played. We were a man down for most of the first half and then lost two more players in the second but no one gave up and kept running and covering but in the end numbers did tell against us.

Team was - Ricky (many thanks - he had a blinding game and made a number of great runs), Smyth, Kern, Midgely, Whittington, T.Price, John, Arnold, P.Dolan, Bennett, Cheetham, J.Perry, W.Pert. J.Smith, Hardy-Gillings

Kesteven man of the match - a tie really between Midge and Jordan Smith both of whom had storming games.
