ENGLAND Reds and England Blues Under 16 teams completed a successful opening day of the Wellington Festival for the host nation.

England Reds beat Canada Under 17s 29-12 in the Festival opener thanks to a hat-trick of tries from number eight Dan Grange (Ilkley GS, Ilkley RFC, Leeds Carnegie Academy and Yorkshire) while full-back Grant McConnell (Millfield School and Somerset) scored two tries in England Blues 39-5 victory over a plucky Belgium Under 17s.

Grange scored twice to give the Reds a 12-0 lead but Canada, who had beaten their Yorkshire in a warm-up match, rallied strongly and pulled level by half time.

It was only in the final quarter that England managed to subdue a strong Canadian side with full-back Howard Packman (Northampton School for Boys, Old Northamptonians RFC, Northampton Saints Academy and East Midlands), winger Tim Jeffers (St Ambrose College, Warrington RFC, Sale Sharks Academy and Cheshire) and the hat-trick try from Grange sealing the win.

England Blues were also made to work hard for their win by a lively Belgium side who restricted them to a 12-5 lead at half time.

The Blues established control in the second half and eventually eased to victory with centre Pete Moore (Abingdon School and Oxfordshire), prop Dan Pullinger (Stoke Dameral Community College, Devonport Services RFC and Devon), number eight Thomas Woolsencroft (Taunton School, Topsham RFC , Exeter Chiefs Academy and Devon) and full-back Alistair Addy (Myerscough College, Sale RFC, Sale Sharks Academy and Lancashire) adding to McConnells brace of tries.

The Wellington Festival continues on Tuesday April 19 when England Blues play Scotland Under 17s at 11am followed by Canada v Belgium at 1pm and England Reds v France Under 16s A at 3.30pm.

The festival concludes on April 22 when English Divisions North and English Divisions Midlands will join the international sides.
