Brixham 26 - Yatton 10

Brixham have been hanging around in South West 2 for more than ten seasons and are determined to make this the promotion year. Yatton having their second season fielded six nineteen year olds, so this first league match of the year was a bit of a David v Goliath affair.

Kicking off 30 minutes before normal league times, fired up Brixham came immediately charging down the slope of their pitch. Within two minutes first choice wing for the visitors Dan Silcock was replaced with a hamstring injury and within seconds Brixham’s penalty went between the posts.

Five minutes later, probably Brixham’s best two player’s, fullback Mat Dempsey and centre Ben Lovell, linked well from the back of a scrum within Yattons pressured 22 area. Lovells conversion put Yatton behind by 10 points all within the first 10 minutes.

Desperate to get points while they had the slope advantage well drilled Brixham continued to try and break through Yatton’s tackling but despite all the effort they were restricted to only two more penalties during the second quarter, as Yattons pack began to get the measure of the home side.

Deep into first half injury time Yatton’s break through up the centre of the field saw youngster James Grimes out of the match due to an ankle injury. Jon Shorney’s penalty put Yatton on the scoreboard.

At 50 minutes Brixham landed their next penalty chance and Yatton’s flew wide minutes later.

Yatton were unlucky to be adjudged, after a few moments of hesitation, to have knocked on inches from the try line as the pass skidded across the grass before reaching the player who gathered it.

With five minutes remaining Brixham, quite rightly, took advantage of Yatton’s disarray while rearranging positions due to injury and touched down between the posts to make the score line of 26-3 look more convincing.

But Yatton had the last say and finished looking slightly the stronger as wing Glen Jones grounded Shorney’s kick a head. Yatton’s pack watched the far out conversion with some satisfaction for their afternoons work, having struck four against the head in the scrums.

This Saturday Yatton’s 1st XV face newly promoted Walcot at home for a normal kick-off time at 3-00pm. All Vice Presidents and Guests’ are invited to the sit down two course hot meal.
