GIRLS from St Edwards School in Leek and Holywell School from Bedfordshire will have a rare opportunity to play at Twickenham Stadium on May 7.

They are the two Midlands qualifiers for The Girls National Showcase which will be played on the same day as the Army v Navy Babcock Trophy match at the home of English Rugby. Members of the England women’s team who completed a RBS 6 Nations Grand Slam last month will be at Twickenham to run a coaching session for the youngsters.

St Edwards qualified by winning the Midlands West regional finals tournament which was played at Five Ways OE’s ground on the southern outskirts of Birmingham.

They edged out Staffordshire rivals St Francis with a winning try scored in the dying seconds of a high-quality contest.

The tournament, the culmination of the advanced Tag rugby – a non-contact version of the sport – programme in the West Midlands for Years 7 and 8 girls, featured 16 teams who had battled their way through a series of local qualifying events.

The fair-play award went to Whitley ‘B’ team from Warwickshire and player of the tournament went to St Edwards’ Elise Skelding for some incredible footwork and speed.

Holywell won the Midlands East regional event at Leicester University where they beat Bedfordshire rivals Almeda in the final.

Both schools have close links to Ampthill RFC and there was nothing to divide the teams at the end of normal time as they were tied 5-5 on tries. Holywell sealed victory with a golden try scored in extra time.
