Millwall 83 – Burnham on Crouch 15

MILLWALL’S campaign for promotion started in earnest on Saturday (September 13) with a comprehensive victory at home against league rivals Burnham-On-Crouch. Games between the two clubs have historically been closely contested but Millwall’s well-drilled backline and powerful forwards were too much for their Essex Division Two rivals.

Coach Dave Leftley was particularly impressed by the efforts of the forwards. “When the engine room is firing it sets the perfect platform for the backs to do their job. It was a big scoreline today and it showed what your team can do when the forwards are making big plays,” he said.

Man of the match Drew Benjamin earned praise for his hard work at the breakdown and seemed to be everywhere, and some observers asked whether there were actually twins on the field.

With a strong Millwall pack securing clean ball, the backs were afforded several try-scoring opportunities with tries coming from all over the park. Fly-half Dom Sutherland orchestrated some well-worked moves as his backs made mincemeat of the opposition defence, with some of the tries coming from deep inside the home side’s own twenty-two.

Centre Dan Lawrence picked up his second hat-trick in as many weeks while outside backs Ben Smith and Roberto Pescador also did well to score themselves a brace each. It was an entertaining affair and Millwall supporter Rangus James was impressed with the skills on display and the quality of the teamwork.

“It’s clear these boys have been training hard together when you see how well they support each other,” he said. “With a couple of the tries it seemed like the ball went through fifteen sets of hands and then some. But the sportsmanship is what impressed me most from both sides. It was a pleasure to watch.”

The team has been well prepared and with the new addition of backs coach David Mooney lending his expertise to the backline things are looking good for a strong season for the Isle of Dogs men.

The club also enjoyed victory in its other games with the Llamas winning away at South Woodham Ferrers while the third team also won.

Millwall train on Monday and Wednesday nights at Mudchute Farm and have men’s, women’s and youth teams. To find out more email
