Your News Former Labour MP to bow out as Birstall President

ANDY Reed, the former Labour MP for Loughborough, will bow out as President of Leicestershire club Birstall on May 1.

Reed will play for his own Samurai Presidents XV against Birstall in a match to raise funds for Rich Englegardt, the Birstall player who broke his neck at the start of last season, and the Rugby Football Foundation.

Reeds XV will include former Samoa and Leicester centre Freddie Tuilagi and former England rugby league international Ikram Butt, who is now managing director of the British Asian Rugby Association.

Reed is stepping down as president of Birstall, a flourishing club who play outside the league structure, at the end of last season and aims to bow out with a win after his XV were beaten 12 months ago.

I need to go out on top with a good win, Reed said. The club convinced me to stay on another year as President so apologies to those who think they were misled last year into playing just once more!
