Your News Local MPs enjoy Barking and Dagenham primary school rugby

Margaret Hodge, MP for Barking, and Jon Cruddas, MP for Dagenham & Rainham, were among the guests who enjoyed the Barking and Dagenham primary tag rugby festival staged at Dagenham Rugby Club for the first time.

The Barking and Dagenham schools sports partnership have been organising the primary school tournament with Robert Clack School for 10 years, and this festival was overseen by Rod Jones, the local Schools Sports Coordinator.

Other guests included Councillor R Gill, member for education, Helen Jenner, corporate director childrens services and Jane Hargreaves, head of school improvement.

It was the establishment of a new club-schools link that brought the tournament to Dagenham RFC, with the hope that the young players introduced to the club on this day will go on to become members in the future.

More than 40 young leaders from Robert Clacks rugby academy helped run the event in various roles including refereeing and acting as team coaches. The academy runs young leaders, referee and coaching courses for its pupils supported by RFU development officers.

A record entry for the event comprised 16 teams from 13 schools, split into four pools of four for a round robin.

When it came to the finals the Cup and Plate were won by William Bellamy A and Beam respectively, while William Bellamy B took the Bowl and Grafton B won the Trophy.

Schools taking part: William Bellamy, Beam, Valence, Rush Green, Dorothy Barley, St Margarets, William Ford, Grafton, St Peters, St Josephs, Monteagle, Ripple, Marks Gate.
