France Universities 31 England Students 19

A late France Universities try flattered the scoreline for the home side somewhat at Versailles today/last Saturday as they avenged last months 25-23 defeat at the hands of the England Students at Richmond RFC.

The two sides once again battled it out solidly for 80 minutes and, up until the 77th minute, just a try separated the teams before the Universities side grabbed their fifth and final converted touchdown to ensure their victory.

It was very close as it was in England, summed up the England Students team manager Peter Drewett. There was some excellent rugby played by both sides with some dynamic forwards and backs play and lots of off-loading.

It was a very physical encounter with both teams giving everything they had and that final try really flatters the scoreline.

The home side took an early lead when their loose-head prop bundled over for an unconverted try, but the lively England Students answered with two touchdowns in four minutes.

The first, after nine minutes, came from some excellent movement by them as they put the ball through phase after phase before, eventually, sending left-wing Sam Miller storming over.

Fly half Paul Roberts embellished the score with an excellent wide-angle conversion but couldnt find the target, some four minutes, later when once again called into action.

This time it was after some tenacious following up from the visitors who capitalised on a Universities mistake in their own half to send full back Louis Messer roaring in for a 12-5 lead after 13 minutes.

The Universities side hit back, however, with two tries, one converted, up to the break from both of their centres to lead 17-12 by half-time and had even edged further ahead, 24-12, before the visitors could respond.

Prop Barney Purbrook, hooker Jack Yeandle, lock Richard Boyle, flanker Jamie Fleming, and the half-back pairing of scrum half Russell Weir, fly half Chris Reakes had all come on by the time that the Students grabbed their third ty on 66 minutes.

This time it came courtesy of a kick through the Universities defence and well finished off by Students skipper and No.8 Tom Sargeant, his third try in as many matches, and well converted by Reakes.

Despite having the last of the bench members, Ed Tellwright, coming on, six minutes from time, England Students just couldnt find another score and it was left to the home side to extend their lead three minutes from full time.

They were two talented teams who would have learnt an enormous amount about player development from this experience, summed up Drewett. Its been a very positive development season for us, the lads have worked very hard as have head coach Paul Westgate and his assistant James Farndon along with the support staff.

It completes the England Students fixtures for this season which has seen them win one of their three games, at home to the France Universities, while also losing narrowly 29-25 to the Portugal national team.
