Your News Now rugby refs get boost from Bradford Grammar

BRADFORD Grammar School has a long and distinguished reputation for producing top-class rugby union players, Charlie Hodgson being a current Premiership player who graduated from the school to earn a string of senior England caps.

But thanks to a new initiative launched this year at the school, top-class referees of the future from BGS may be sharing the rugby spotlight with the players.

For this year the schools Sixth Form General Studies programme has broken new ground by offering pupils the opportunity to complete the Rugby Football Unions Young Officials Award, the first step on the RFUs officiating pathway.

Under the guidance of Will Halford, Referee Development Manager for the North East and Yorkshire, Neil Spence, Community Rugby Coach for West Yorkshire, and members of Bradford Grammar Schools sports department staff, seven pupils have completed theory sessions and developed their practical skills over four tournaments hosted by the school.

I am absolutely delighted with the success of this initiative. The boys have made a huge contribution to all the tournaments we host. said Director of Sport, Charles Lines.

I understand that we are the first school group to have fully completed the award, which is a great credit to the staff and pupils involved. The boys are already looking forward to graduating to the Entry Level Refereeing Award and taking charge of officiating at our Junior School fixtures next year.
