The game commenced with a knock on from the kick off by Olney, then a kick which failed to reach touch by Reading Abbey, not a great start by either side. Though it wasn’t long before both sides got into the game and began to play some enjoyable rugby from a spectator’s point of view on what had to be the warmest afternoon of the season to date.

It was Reading Abbey who were first to get a score, after their speedy little Winger darted through a gap in the Olney defence to score a try, which was then converted. Olney’s Centre, James Hawken got Olney three points from a converted penalty just moments later taking it to 3-7, before Olney’s Prop, George Stanton made a superb break mid field and after passing several Abbey players did a lovely pass to Winger Johnathan Bryce who continued a strong run before Stanton was on his shoulder in support to complete the move with a deserved try which J Hawken converted taking Olney into the lead 10-7. Abbey then brought the score to 10-10 after converting a penalty awarded for an Olney player being off side.

Olney then had a few strong attacking phases with one try being held up, before they were awarded a penalty which Captain, Chris Parnham chose to tap and go from five metres out and scored a try himself, where the conversion was not successful but put the home side back in front 15-10. With both sides pressing hard in attack and making some decent tackles in defence, it was then from an Abbey attack where they put up a high ball which was intercepted by Olney’s second row, Steve Harrison before making a break himself before the ball was recycled through some great support play with they try being scored by Full Back, Samuel Skingsley with Hawken converting extending Olney’s lead 22-10, before scoring a great individual try and converting himself to put Olney ahead 29-10.

Abbey continued to try to get further points though some strong tackles by Olney’s forwards in particular preventing such danger, and Flanker, Cameron Byrne made a strong run with Johnathan Bryce once again there in support before off loading further to Sam Skingsley to score his second try of the afternoon, with Hawkens boot gaining the extra two points 36-10. Olney’s other Winger, James Padfield then made a clean break from the twenty two, and passing several Abbey players the ball was lost eventually in a tackle, and with Olney looking comfortable before they gave away a couple of silly penalties which Abbey took advantage of by using the lineout to gain territory and scored a second try which was converted taking the score to 36-17.

The game was completed with Chris Parnham scoring his second try of the afternoon, with Hawken converting completing the score with a home win 43-17.

Olney will welcome Marlow this coming Saturday for another home fixture kicking off at 3pm.
