Midlands set for South West finale

Paton hopes for last match win

The Midlands complete their campaign in the RFUW Divisional Programme with a match against the South West at Cheltenham RFC on Sunday March 20.

The Midlands followed up a narrow win against the North in their opening match with a 19-12 defeat against London & South East at Banbury two weeks ago.

The South West is a final chance for the Midlands players to stake claims for inclusion in the Super 4s tournament which takes place in early and Andy Paton, the RFUW Talent Development Officer for the Midlands, has high hopes for his players.

This is the final round of games in the Divisional Senior Competition and I am looking forward to the players getting one last chance to put a marker down for inclusion in the Super 4s which take place in early May, Paton said.

This will be a highly competitive game between two divisions that have been slightly weakened by call ups to the England A squad for their game against Spain this weekend which has affected both squads.

This shows that the Divisional programme is really working and that players who are performing for their respective divisions get a chance to join up with the England A squad and get the opportunity to test themselves at the next level up.

I am sure coaches LJ Adams and Vicky Massarella will be excited by this game and a chance to see how far the Midlands squad have progressed and developed over the three matches.

The RFUW Divisional Programme forms an integral part of the RFUW Player Pathway, which can see players from u15s upwards progress from playing club rugby to potentially representing their country. Current England stars who have qualified through the player pathway include Margaret Alphonsi and Emily Scarratt

Players selected for the Divisional Programme have been selected by their Constituency Body and if they are successful could go on to try out for England this season , or qualify for the Under 18s and Under 15s RFUW National Talent Development Groups, which looks to develop the future talent of England Womens rugby.
