Following last week's good second half display against Heriots, Hawick
looked to continue where they left off and get this season's League campaign
back on track. The match was played in atrocious conditions throughout with
constant heavy rain and wind which in the end, suited the visitor's bigger
pack with the heavy underfoot conditions. Hawick battled all the way and as
last week, the result was in doubt right to the final whistle. Hawick had
some notable performances with Craig Charters in the second row and
debutant, Fujian Kitione Rawala at No8.
Hawick began the stronger and got off to the best start when Captain Keith
Hadley crossed for a try in the corner following some good work by Neil
Renwick and garry Johnstone. The big Ayr pack were beginning to take control
and this eventually produced a converted try by Climo, the same player
slotting a penalty to give Ayr a 10 points to 5 halftime lead.
Hawick reduced Ayr's lead to 10-8 with a Neil Renwick penalty but again the
big Ayr pack were turning the screw and the constant pressure told with
another converted try. As always, Hawick never surrendered and a Craig Neish
penalty gave Hawick hope at 11-17 behind and had the odd bounce or decision
went the other way, the result could have went in Hawick's favour. Sadly
Hawick couldn't improve on the 17-11 scoreline and as last week, a losing
bonus point was all that Hawick came away with.
Final score, Hawick 17, Ayr 11.
