England Students have named their team to face Portugal’s national side in Lisbon on Saturday (March 5, 3pm local and UK time).

Bristol University centre Tom Mitchell will captain England Students against a Portugal side ranked 20th in the world by the International Rugby Board.

It will be a tough assignment with the Portuguese fresh from three matches in the Six Nations B competition in February, including wins over Romania and Russia, both of whom have qualified for this year’s Rugby World Cup.

Will Warden skippered England to a 25-23 win in their opening match of the season against France Universities last Friday (February 25).

But the Loughborough University lock had an operation to remove his appendix on Tuesday and is replaced in the starting XV by Richard Boyle of Northumbria University.

In the only other change to the 22, Bristol second row Luke Bellinger takes Boyle’s vacant spot on the bench.

With Mitchell stepping up to the captaincy, his role as vice captain goes to flanker Tom Sargeant.

The Portuguese won their inaugural meeting with England Students 21-18 at the Estádio Universitário in January 2010, the same venue as Saturday’s match.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to play a well-ranked international side,” said Pete Drewett, England Students’ team manager.

“It is bad luck to lose Will Warden who led the team superbly against the French but we have a number of leaders in the side in different areas of the game and Tom Sargeant will look after the forwards.

“Richard Boyle was pushing for a start last week and it’s a good chance for him to show what he can do.”

England trained next door to the Estádio Universitário this afternoon in warm conditions and their kickers practised on the main pitch which Drewett described as “a great surface”.

“The team played without fear against France and capitalised on their opportunities with three good tries,” said Drewett.

“They had to adapt quickly after a difficult first 10 minutes but the spirit was good and so was the defensive organisation.”
