Weymouth Football Club have been grabbing the all of headlines recently and the town’s rugby fraternity have had to take a back seat, but the much anticipated new rugby season gets underway this weekend with Weymouth kicking off their campaign in an EDF Cup first round tie at Cooper Avon Tyres on Saturday.

Head coach Barry Ross Mackenzie said: “The rugby this season is going to be intense, just a quick glance at the fixture list brings up league games against Dorchester, the first time at senior team level for about 15 years and also Bridport, Puddletown and Swanage and Wareham and Wimborne second teams”.

“Our pre season training has gone very well, in a trial game two weeks ago we beat Sherborne. In fact some of the lads have played right through the summer with the South Dorset Giants rugby league team so their fitness levels should be somewhere near what I require and it is up to the rest of our squad to match them”.

“We are back to training twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at our Monmouth Avenue ground starting at 6.30pm. It is our target to win every game that we play and I believe that we are capable of achieving that, but only if we all show the commitment required to achieve that goal”.

“We run two senior sides, a veterans xv and have a thriving youth and mini section at the club and will make any new players welcome, just turn up on a Tuesday or Thursday evening or call me on 07832280488”.

“I don’t want to be drawn on Weymouth Football Club’s new ground proposal as it will be up to the committee to decide which road we go down. We have kept the players fully informed of the football club’s plans, but I do not want the situation to detract in any way from keeping the players focused on their rugby”.
