February Newsletter

I am pleased to say there is a lot of rugby due to be played at the club over the next few weeks after the disruption of the big freeze. All of our club teams have had some successes so far this season and we have more players than ever represented in regional and age grade teams. This is testament to the hard work and commitment of our club coaches and has also been made possible by our inclusion in the Regional Pathway system since the inception of the Argyll and Bute Development officer Billy Thomson. Billy is now supported by NVQ coach Allan Wright since 2009.

Here is a list of forthcoming matches and some of the season highlights so far:

1st XV

Next matches:

West League 1 Oban Lorne v Cumnock, Saturday 05 February, KO 3pm

Regional Bowl Oban Lorne v Lenzie, Saturday 12th February,KO 2:30pm

West League 1 Oban Lorne v Lenzie, Saturday 26th February, KO 3pm

The 1st XV are currently lying in 3rd place in their league and have been undefeated since October. They have everything to play for and can progress to the finals of the Bowl if they can record a win over Lenzie. They then also face Lenzie who are the current league leaders at home 2 weeks later. Training numbers have been at their best for years with over 20 players turning out on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Well done to all the squad and Coach Corrie Louw and Captain Struan Smith in particular for keeping the momentum going.

Angus McCallum has been selected for the Glasgow U-17 squad.

Next match: Grangemouth v Oban Lorne, Sunday 13 February, KO 2pm.

The Ladies recorded a couple of thumping wins at home in the league over Edinburgh Uni and Lismore before losing heavily to Stirling County. They have been forced to take a mid winter break since which has been frustrating for all concerne..

Julie Campbell is in the Scotland U-20 squad and Emma Roxburgh is in the Scotland U-18 squad, Donna Smith and Jen MacLennan are in the West Regional squad.. Youth Coach Muray Hamilton will send a further 4 girls to the Scotland U-18 trials this year.

Argyll U-16's

Next matches:

Paisley v Argyll ( A), Sunday 06 February

Argyll v Firhill HS ( H) National Schools Bowl Final, Friday 25 February KO 1pm

The U-16's have only suffered one loss al season and already won the West Regional Bowl defeating Biggar HS 56-22 in January. They play an exciting brand of offloading rugby which is again testament to their coaches Gerry Ralston, Murray Hamilton and Duncan Aitken. Their home matches are played in Oban so do make the effort to come along and support them when you can.

The following players have been selected for Glasgow representative squads:

Magnus Bradbury ( Oban Lorne), Glasgow U-17

Ciaran Whyte ( Mull), Glasgow U-16

Rhuriadh Aitken ( Mid Argyll) , lasgow U-16

Oban HS S1/S2

Next match:

Oban v Highland (H) Sunday 13 Feb, KO 2pm.

Argyll and Bute RFC

Next match

Greenock Wanderers v Argyll ( A) and Bute, Saturday 09 April KO 2pm.

The former County side was re-constituted in July 2010 with the following management committee:

Chairman Dave Sturrock

Secretary Dee Bradbury

Treasurer Fraser MacCorquodale

Coach Gerry Ralston

Team Manager Darrell Williams.

The team got off to a flying start with a 94-5 home win over a Greenock Wanderers XV in a team composed of Oban Lorne and Mull players. There is a rematch in April with a further home fixture against Irvine in May TBC. It has been very difficult to obtain fixtures this season due to the poor weather, looking forward the committee have submitted a proposal to Scottish Rugby for a regionalised Scottish County Championship. The club has also applied to the Community 2014 and Sportsmatch for funding which is planned to be used to support youh rugby development in the region.

RBS 6 Nations

All the Scotland 6 nations matches will be shown on the clubhouse big screen commencing with France v Scotland on Saturday 05th Feb at 5pm. You are welcome to come along and use your clubhouse facilities as usual.
