Your News Westoe look forward to Darlington Mowden Park warm up

WESTOE travel to Mowden Park on Saturday for what is expected to be a stern work out ahead of their North One campaign which begins in a fortnight’s time.

It is likely to be a friendly in name only as the Darlington side will need no reminding of the 46-5 thrashing the Shieldsmen inflicted on them in front of their own glum supporters in the semi-final of the Durham Senior Cup in March.

On that occasion, Mowden Park - a division higher in North Three - miscalculated the prowess of Gareth Nesbit’s men by intentionally fielding a weakened side to protect their main men for league action and were left with very red faces.

Westoe, sponsored this season by Dunes Adventure Island, went on the win the trophy which was some consolation for just missing out on the runners-up spot and with it a play-off chance of promotion for the third successive year.

Certainly, club chairman and team manager Duncan Murray is under no illusions about the measure of tomorrow’s task. He said: “We wanted a tough preparation for the new season and there is no doubt that is exactly what Mowden Park will have in store for us.” The kick-off is at 3pm

The good news is that Big Nes - on safari in South Africa when his side played a 7-all draw at Kendal in a pre-season clash two weeks ago - is back to lead his side.

And Kiwi Sam Rasch, whose place kicking and all-round skills brought a new dimension to Westoe’s game after he arrived at Wood Terrace in January, flew in from New Zealand this week raring to go.

The bad news is that David Haswell, such a vital cog in the backs, resurrected an old shoulder injury at Kendal and it is feared he will miss the first league game against visitors Beverley.
