Your News 50th Anniversary begins for Aycliffe

Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club began the celebrations for their 50th Anniversary by hosting a triangular tournament with the visiting teams being from Darlington and Sunderland. The weather stayed fine throughout and a sizeable crowd attended with a number of ex-players watching or playing, a squad of 26 players was available for the afternoon. The 50th Anniversary strip, sponsored by the Aston Hotel, was given its first airing

The first game saw the hosts play Sunderland. From the beginning, Aycliffe belied the fact that this was their first match in 4 months. The forwards were on top immediately and, once the backs had found their feet points came from two tries by Paul Ellis, Luke Tinkler converting one of them. The score at the interval was 12 0, and the chance was taken to make a host of replacements. The team did not seem weakened, however, and tries were added by Drew Gibson, Pete Ryans and Gareth Parsonage, who added 2 further conversions. A consolation try and a penalty from Sunderland made the score 31 8.

With Darlington beating Sunderland 41 14, Aycliffe would have to win the last game to take the trophy. With Darlington in the groove after a short break from their previous game, Aycliffe struggled at first but a try from Chris Brown, converted by Tinkler made the score at the break 7 7. In the second half, Darlington scored two tries to take the lead but replies from Andrew Parkin and Ronnie Gilyeat, with the last play of the game, gave Ryans a chance to kick a conversion from wide out to draw the match. Unfortunately the kick narrowly missed and the score was 19 17 to the visitors.

Presentations were made to the match officials and all three teams, in addition, a man of the match was chose each side. Aycliffe would like to thank sponsors Aston Hotel and ServiceForce for their support. On 30th August, Aycliffe travel to Knaresborough for another warm-up game. Details can be found at
