Yatton Scorers - Try C Edwards, B Coughlan, N Spellissy ; Con 2 G Osborne

‘Early slack tackles prove to be the cause of one point defeat’.

Yatton were 17 points down with no reply at 23 minutes into the match. They had the advantage of a good slope but it seemed that lack of training with players out of position due to injuries and absence caused initial lack of awareness and slack tackling.

The home sides 3 tries and a conversion came during a devastating 15 minutes at the end of the first quarter and heralded a long afternoon for frustrated travelling supporters.

But within minutes of what proved to be the last try for Matson, up stepped George Osborne to slot away his team’s first penalty opportunity.

As the visitors settled centre and captain for the day Chris Edwards slid through a gap in midfield and weaved through to under the posts. Other chances during first half injury time were not followed up and the turnaround score line was 17-10.

Matson now had both the slope and strong gusting wind in their favour for the second half and forged further in front by conversion of a penalty at 50 minutes.

However Nic Garnham’s cross kick, in an unfamiliar role at No10, pull Yatton back to 5 points adrift after wing Ben Coughlan gathered and raced to touch down the corner.

Matson sensed danger having seen their substantial lead evaporate and throw everything at the Yatton try line but the defence held good until, on a pitch with no scoreboard, the intense activity and incidences, during prolonged injury time, caused confusion for spectators in the score line when Matson’s Drop Goal conversion was followed minutes later by Coughlan’s break up the touchline and pass to supporting flanker Nic Spellissy. Conversion by G Osborne on the final whistle.

This Saturday Yatton’s 1st XV face up to old favourites North Bristol at home. Preceded by the ever popular Vice Presidents’s hot luncheon (sponsored by The Golden Lion at Wrington); while the 2nd XV travel to Old Reds 2nds and the 3rds have a friendly against British Aerospace 2nds.
