In the west of Scotland it was known as ‘The Fair’. The Glasgow

Fair that is, the fortnight when heavy industry traditionally shut

down in July for the annual holiday. It never really meant that

much to me as a youngster however since the two weeks which were

infinitely more important were ‘Miners Fortnight’ when we would up

sticks and travel to spend two weeks with my uncle in Pentre.
