Your News Blaydon 29 - Coventry 28

At the start of the game 2 sides locked together in the nether regions were separated by just 2 bonus points and at the end of 84 minutes of ebb and flow there was only a single point between them on the field.

All the flowing rugby was played in the opening half when 5 tries were scored and Blaydon led 22-17 but the drama was to come near the end of a scrappy second period.

With the visitors now in front by 22-23 Blaydon put together their only real attack of the half, storming the line near the posts. Coventry pulled down the maul illegally, flanker Alex Nash was banished to the sin-bin and a penalty try awarded to which Dan Kyle added the points.

Blaydon were back in front by 6 points and held out until the 4th minute of time added on when Coventry in a desperate last throw kicked a penalty to the corner.

Their forwards secured the line-out and hooker Dale Ager was driven over. With the last kick of the game fly-half Dan Richards had the chance to win it but could only watch in anguish as his kick sailed harmlessly wide.

Coventry had struck first in a hum-dinger of an opening 40, scoring through second-row Sam Herrington but Blaydon responded instantly with tries from Gavin Jones, Paddy Dias and Robbie Kalbraier to give them a worthy 22-10 advantage.

By the interval however Herrington had crossed again for the visitors, and in the early stages after the break Richards slotted over a brace of penalties for them to set up the remarkable finale.
