It wasn’t Clash of the Titans at Happy Valley on Saturday night, as Newedge Club hopped over to visit Tradition Valley at home, but it was a clash of the main contenders for this years honors and as such Club won the battle, up front, and out wide, to emerge with a 34-11 win, trumping Valleys 2 penalties and a try with 2 tries, 1 penalty and three goals, one of which was a penalty try.

There were plenty of early season jitters on show, handling errors, lost line-outs and strikes against the head, but as the game went on both teams settled and played some balanced rugby, probing the fringes and attacking out wide.

Valley drew first blood, starting with the greater intensity, and after some early pressure landed a penalty from the 22 with ten minutes gone. The next two efforts were from Club’s Jamie Hood, but both were wide by a long mark.

On halftime the game was finely poised at 8-3, Club scoring the first try of the game with a well taken back row move from a scrum in the 22.

Valley started the second half strongly and maintained the pressure for the first quarter before Club closed out the game. First up was a try in the corner, followed by a charge down that yielded another under the posts and then came the penalty try. Club were awarded a scrum on the five-metre line and looked to walk the ball over before the referee decided that the Valley scrum had broken up early.

With seven minutes left to play Valley finally crossed the line, going over in the corner after an excellent and sustained multi-phase period of pressure, but as in the first half, Club ended the game with a try, Adam Reby running the length of the field, before passing to Dave Tibbets for the touchdown and the final score of 34 – 11.

There was no lacking in intensity throughout the game, but this was by no means a stellar performance from either team despite the somewhat flattering score-line to Cub, and if either team is to emerge victorious in March, there is some improvement to look forward to.
