Old Deer Park fund-raiser for Queensland and Christchurch

George Smith and Jerry Collins to lead rugby stars in Southern Hemisphere Charity Day at London Welsh

George Smith and Jerry Collins will be among the rugby stars on show at Old Deer Park, the home of London Welsh RFC, on Sunday (March 6) for a Southern Hemisphere Charity Day to raise funds for the Queensland flood appeal and the victims of the Christchurch earthquakes.

The highlight of the day will be a match between an Australian XV and a Pacific Barbarians team, which will get underway at 3pm.

The Australian XV will be led by former Wallaby George Smith and will be coached by Ospreys coach Scott Johnson and former Australia fly half and World Cup winner Michael Lynagh, who was born in Brisbane, Queensland.

The Pacific Barbarians will be captained by former All Black Jerry Collins and feature among others Filo Tiatia, Henry Paul, Mosese RaluniViliame Satala and Sililo Martens. In addition, the likes of Doug Howlett will also be present on the day, but unable to take part due to club commitments.

Heavily involved in the organising of the charity day has been London Welsh and Tonga back row forward Epi Taione.

Australia and New Zealand are two countries we as Pacific Islanders look upon as mother countries,” he said.

“They’ve always helped us over the years and doing something like this is a way showing our support to all the families and letting them know that we are thinking of them.”

The idea was originally to hold a charity day to raise funds following the floods in Queensland, as the Pacific Island community has strong ties to the area.

Brisbane is and was home to the likes of Toutai and Mafileo Kafu and former captain and Tonga legend Sione Mafi. Saracens scrum halfMosese Raluni played for Brisbane and his brother Jacob grew up there and played for Queensland.

Queensland is home to one of the biggest Pacific Island communities and a lot of them were affected. A lot of Tongans and Fijians have moved there over the years,” said Taione.

Following the earthquakes in Christchurch, however, the charity day was broadened. He added: “Watching the events in New Zealand we felt something had to be done. It’s hit the rugby community very hard.

“Everyone has been very supportive, and everyone is willing to give up their time. The timing is quite hard as it’s the most crucial part of the season, but the response has been absolutely fantastic.

“It’s also amazing the amount of support we’ve received from the business community and people around the world, from sending donations to sending food and drink for the day.”

The charity day will also feature an Aussie Rules match, an Aussie beer tent, including live music, an international touch rugby match, a tag rugby match between Queensland and New South Wales, a touch rugby tournament for kids and a Pacific village, including traditional music and food & drink.

All the action gets underway at Old Deer Park from 10:30am on Sunday March 6. Tickets priced at £10. VIP tickets are available at £100 + VAT per person, which will include a buffet menu, table wine and reserved seats.
