THE glowing reputation of the young women at Liverpool St Helens Rugby Union Club now has an international dimension after the clubs Under 15 and Under 18 teams were invited to play two French regional representative teams in the South of France.

The matches will take place in early May at Rugby Club du Pays Six Fournais in the city Jonny Wilkinson now calls home, Toulon.

LSH were contacted by the French Clubs Vice President, Christian Arnaud, who wanted to arrange a showpiece rugby match between the South of France U15 and U18 Regional Teams and a team from England.

We were very flattered to be invited, said RFU Community Rugby Coach John Foster. The standard of rugby in France will be very high, but Im sure the girls will give a good account of themselves.

The LSH Squad will fly to France on May 4 and will be guests of the French Rugby Union at Toulon v Toulouse match in Marseille the following day before playing their matches on the Sunday.

LSH captains Alison Burrows (U18) and Emma McCartney (U15) were delighted at the prospect of playing the French. This is an absolutely fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our skills. It will be an amazing experience and the girls are all very excited, said Alison, who this week was also selected to represent the North of England in matches against the Midlands, South East and South West in the RFUW Divisional Programme.

Fly-half Emma, from Rainford High Technology College, who has also been chosen to play for the North of England along with six of her team mates, believes the match will help promote womens rugby in both countries.

Ive been playing rugby since I was little, but more and more girls are now taking up rugby as its a great way to keep fit and you make friends for life she says.
