From the kick off (to touch) the visitors looked unsettled despite winning the home leg in Sept. Crusaders played confidently using the wind and Elliot at 10 to kick for territory and then feed Blinkhorn at the back of the pack as a battering ram through the Woodbridge forwards. The Woodbridge pack responded in kind using Hannon in the second row and its own No8; Cooke. Play stayed central for much of the first quarter and the penalty count rose as both sides looked for weakness. Crusaders had the lion’s share of possession and kept the play in the forwards only rarely playing wide preferring to kick over and regain possession from the set pieces. Woodbridge attempted to get their backs involved, especially Steward and Yorke but was less precise with its kicks and failed to find any gaps. After Woodbridge surprisingly ran a penalty in Crusaders 22, the hosts kicked to clear and found Barton isolated in defence which, with support, allowed Smith to score. Invigorated by this Blinkhorn restarted the attack with a trade-mark charge from the restart and Crusaders ended the half with a penalty from Loone.

Warriors restarted with energy and made an assault on Crusaders 22 winning three kickable penalties, only one of which they converted and using centres Yorke and Steward as well as embattled and injured No8 Cooke to great effect. The penalty count and a yellow card reflected the heightened pace but Woodbridge failed to keep territory as the gusty wind hindered their kicking game. Crusaders defence remained unbreached through some excellent tackling and efficient rucking and counter-mauling from their hard-working pack. In a cruel twist for Woodbridge during a short moment of pressure at the end of the game Crusaders won a surprise penalty try which was converted to end a tense game 15 – 3 and a deserved victory to the home team.
