FIRST steps in league competition for any new team are always nervous and exciting and for the rugby girls from the Lancaster Campus of the University of Cumbria, Wednesday’s (November 23) trip to Salford for their British Universities Colleges Sport debut in Northern Division 2A there’s a real buzz in the air.

The excitement stems from a series of training sessions which have not only enabled the residue of last season’s team to hone their skills but also allowed another contingent of student newcomers to take up the sport.

Although losing four of last season’s squad because they have moved on from their studies in the North West, the ranks have been swelled to 30 girls as the induction process via a fresher’s fair, a touch rugby festival and the use of facilities at Vale of Lune RUFC delivered excellent results.

RFU Community Rugby Coach Martin Powell has been in charge of the development process via twice-weekly coaching sessions and already he has seen two of his charges – Betsy Sterland and Sarah Hothersall – drafted into the Lancashire Senior Women’s squad.

First taste of competitive action for the Cumbria girls came in a development match against their neighbours from Lancaster University and while both teams had their successes in a four-part trial, Cumbria emerged with their confidence very much intact and their appetite for league action fully whetted.

“Both teams played with intensity and commitment,” said CRC Powell. “But also with the enjoyment and enthusiasm the game is all about. The skill level on show was top class, with some excellent passing and support play, while the tackling from both sides was formidable.

“Wednesday’s Northern Division 2A game at Broughton RUFC will be the first for five years by a Cumbria University women’s team. If they come through that test OK, the rematch with Lancaster in a Northern Conference Cup fixture the following week should be quite a tussle.”
