Despite taking the lead after only 4 minutes, when Dan Slater was first to react to a chip for the try line by Nick Heard, Seghill suffered defeat at the hands of a stylish Prudhoe and Stocksfield side, at Welfare Park on Saturday.

The visitors, who were relegated from Division 2 last season, hit back less than 10 minutes later, to take the lead, when Luke Turought's try was converted by Chris Russell.

Seghill were reduced to 14 men, when Anth Lowery was yellow carded for handling in the ruck, and moments later blind-side flanker Emerson Brown increased Prudhoe's lead with a fine solo try. Russell also added the conversion.

The visitors had to replace full-back Paul Griffin, when he was injured scoring a try in the left corner. Russell, in fine kicking form, slotted over the conversion from an acute angle. He was on target again, just before the break, converting Steve Rodgers try.

Seghill made changes to the pack at the break, and brought on Chris McVeigh on the wing for his debut, and although Prudhoe increased their lead, when Steve Rodgers got his second try of the afternoon, Seghill held their own in the second half. A late try from Rick Monaghan, playing in the second row this week, converted by Jake Armstrong saw the home side take some consolation for the defeat.
