Your News Chesham Women 19 - Tabard Women 17

Chesham Women were delighted to start their game against Tabard this week with a full side, and even two players on the substitutes bench. With a number of new players that have been attending training making an appearance on the playing field, things are looking up for Chesham Rugby Club's Women's side. The Women were also cheered along on the afternoon by a large crowd of supporters, including head coach; England Women's International Rocky Clark.

Chesham's game started well, a strong scrum in the opposition's half saw No.8 Jenni Balmer make a classic blindside break. She found scrum-half Jane Morris in support who showed a fantastic turn of pace to speed down the wing and score the home sides first try. The score was converted by full-back Rebecca Watts in the breezy conditions. The opening score seemed to galvanise Tabard who spent much of the next twenty minutes attacking the Chesham line. Fantastic defending by the home side kept Tabard out, but the pressure eventually told and the visitors broke through for their opening score.

The 'Stagettes' did not let the Tabard score dishearten them, and knew that by carrying strongly and executing their game plan they would be able to dominate the opposition. Chesham soon hit back and had an attacking lineout deep in Tabard territory. Quick ball released Chesham's dangerous backline and a great pass put outside centre Naomi Eskers through a gap. A fantastic run through Tabard's defence saw Eskers score Chesham's second try, with the extras added from Watt's boot.

The forwards were enjoying some competitive scrummaging with neither side fully able to dominate their opposite numbers. The lineouts were also extremely competitive with Nikitta Flynn in particular winning many of her own throws and effectively disrupting Tabard's ball. Chesham went in at half time with a 14-5 lead and after an inspirational speech from Clark, came out determined to extend their lead in the second half.

However, the second period saw Tabard come out strongly and they scored a try within minutes while Chesham were still switched off. The home side still had the lead with 14 points to ten, but they were by no means safe. The Stagettes continued to enjoy the majority of possession but their attacks were being thwarted by Tabard's defence. It took another mazy run from Eskers to cut through the Tabard defence and secure Chesham's third try of the afternoon, although unfortunately Watts pushed the conversion wide in the strong wind.

An exhausted Chesham side then let in a converted Tabard try with minutes to go, bringing the score agonizingly close. Tabard now had their tails up and were fighting hard for a turnover of the game. They continued to launch attacks at the Chesham line but the Stagettes showed real spirit to hold them out, despite being exhausted from the game. It was an extremely nervous final minute for the on looking supporters before the final whistle blew and Chesham secured their first win of the season.

"I was really pleased to have such a great squad going in to the match, and we played the game I know we have been capable of producing" said Captain Vicky Boorman. "We got quick ball out to our backs and were able to score some well worked tries, all the time spurred on by the knowledge that Rocky was there to coach and support us."

Forward of the Match was named as Jenni Balmer for her excellent support lines and ruck work throughout the game. Back of the Match went to one of several new recruits, Emma Edrich, who was playing her first ever game of rugby. She made some huge try-saving tackles down the wing and showed some great spirit when attacking with the ball.
