Your News Westoe lose out to plucky Stockport

PLUCKY Stockport overcame 14-man Westoe in a real dogfight at Wood Terrace on Saturday.

The game was a really scrappy affair and was overshadowed by a sending off for Westoe's Oliver Stedman.

The No. 8 felt agrieved by some of the robust Stockport tactics and lashed out at his opposite number resulting in his dismissal.

The match was played out in front of a crowd of 250 and took its time to get into any rhythm.

Twenty minutes were on the clock when Stockport deservedly broke the deadlock thanks to a try from No. 8 Jordan Pearson, Josh Longmore subsequently converted.

Westoe's reply was instant with Tommy Banks scoring his seventh try of the season making it 5-7.

Stedman scored a 36th minute penalty to give the Shieldsmen an 8-7 half-time advantage.

The two sides traded early second half tries with Smith getting the first of his two to make it 8-12 on 43 minutes.

Full-back Ryan Beattie then went over five minutes later with a powerful run before Stedman again converted.

The game then became ugly with errors from both sides resulting in sloppy play and lots of errors.

Then in the 57th minute Stedman was sent off and the effects were almost immediate.

Smith got his second try of the game for Stockport from the restart in play and Longmore successfully converted.

Stockport managed to score again after 66 minutes through winger Mike Kaciubskyj with Longmore converting again.

Westoe did manage to secure a losing bonus point when flanker Ben Franklin went over on 72 minutes but his conversion attempt was wayward.

Stockort coach Tim Burgon was delighted with the victory and the second half display in particular.

He said:" We said before the game that we wanted to be in the game at half-time and we managed to do that.

"We showed lots of grit and determination in the second half and managed to win the battle.

"I feel that thoroughly deserved the win and we will certainly enjoy this one."

Westoe captain Gareth Nesbit was dissapointed with the display of his team, especially in front of a bumper crowd at Wood Terrace.

He said: "We have to congratulate Stockport on their win but in such of such a big crowd our performance level was dissapointing.

"We played well below par and going to 14 men certainly didnt't help, but that's all part and parcel of the game.

Losing Ollie (Stedman) was probably the end of the game for us and it is now vital we win our next game away at Hull Ionians."
