Amazons struggle with Richmond

The Amazons started in promising form with Captain Rickard lead the attack and, through dogged scrimmaging, held possession through early phases for full back Johnson to score on ten minutes. A hot crowd sensed a turnaround in fortune following last week’s battering at Aylesford. Richmond had other ideas and turned quickly to organise their attack and kick tactically from hand to push the Amazons back into their half and support their forwards for flanker Lewis to score. Still confident the Amazons rallied but the visitors played the ball out wider drawing some hesitant tackles from the hosts. Richmond built the pressure despite repeated penalties for offside, not releasing and a high tackle but the Amazons failed to capitalise before Richmond’s big No8 ran through virtually untouched to score. A late try by Rickard closed the first half with only 2 points difference.

The visitor’s forwards continued to pressurise Woodbridge from the restart rewarded by Rennison scoring against a disorganised defence. Shortly afterwards Richmond repeated the pattern for their winger Kingston to score despite increasing penalties, a yellow card for repeated offside and almost every line-out throw being penalised for not straight. Woodbridge showed intermittent flare, some new players contributing well, and Johnson scored a well worked try down the wing but Richmond turned up the concentration and drew too many Amazons into narrow defence giving their Hogan an easy score and just before the end fly half Clements and substitute Murphy both of whom had a great game put in some excellent running for Murphy to score. Final score Woodbridge Amazons 15; Richmond 32.
