Favourites, Crusaders kicked off and after an exchange of kicks set about forward domination and regular supply to their backs. The Warriors looked sharp though and, although the lighter pack, held their share of scrums and harried and interfered enough at the rucks to win ball and disrupt the visitors who had to kick over to hold territory. Penalties on both sides frustrated attacks as did some great tackling such as Andrew’s try-saver on Crusader’s Byrne. On 20mins Smith gathered a defensive kick and executed a text book up and under to score for the Warriors. But the home team were repeatedly penalised for being off their feet in the ruck and Crusaders eventually punished them with scores from winger Smith and prop Stuart, the latter converted by Burchett. The Warrior’s Dumbill exploited a late penalty to take three points back before half time.

The second half saw yet more committed disruption at the breakdown by Woodbridge who played with spirit if not finesse. Their reward was an early try out wide for their winger Lloyd after some good forward play, Dumbill converted. Crusaders kept kicking long to keep the hosts under pressure and won a number of penalties as Woodbridge continued to go in off their feet. However some good running from Yorke, and continued belligerence from the tight five in the scrum enabled the home team to hold off assaults from Crusaders Long and their battling No 8 Blinkhorn. In the end the Warriors imperfect style took the honours through hard work and drive.
