Southwold deals a blow to Warriors

The Warriors arrived at a bright, windy Southwold still smarting from last week’s defeat at the hands of Ipswich YM. Early exchanges saw some solid possession by a larger Southwold as they camped in the Woodbridge half for the first quarter of the game. An early missed penalty was followed by a succession of crash balls from Southwold’s forwards as their scrum half distributed well until Butler scored for McDaniel to convert. The strong wind suspended the Warriors kicks, disrupted their line-outs and fed possession to Southwold who through a series of turned scrums held possession to keep Woodbridge largely in their own half. When the visitors gained good ball their backs looked a threat but with no bulk to break through they were forced to kick over and the wind killed any good territory. Penalties conceded on both sides gave Southwold most of the gain as their wind-assisted kicks pinned Woodbridge back and despite some good defence Southwold’s Stevenson crashed over to score.

Pressure from Southwold continued in the second half testing tempers before Woodbridge’s Cooke ran into Southwold’s 22 and was rewarded with a penalty from Bruce. Southwold regrouped to establish a series of attacking platforms from which they set up waves of crash balls. Some creative running forced two penalties which McDaniel converted and territorial gains produced a try from Starks. The last minutes of the game saw renewed attempts at the forward bulldozer by Southwold met with stoic tackling and another run by Cooke but it was Southwold’s match.
