Your News Eastern Counties dominate O2 Touch day at Twickenham

Norfolk based Wymondham RFCs Touch Rugby squad capped a glorious and memorable day out at Twickenham, home to the England RFU, last Saturday (Sept 10) by finishing runners-up in the O2 Touch Finals Day Cup competition.

Ten invited teams competed on the day and while the sponsors own squad, O2 Touch Me If You Can, actually finished top of the four game Cup competition table they sportingly nominated Wymondham as the days prize winners of a signed England team shirt.

With the clubs split into two groups of five initially Wymondham sailed through their opening Group 1 matches winning all four to ensure their place in the final Cup competition.

Their run included a four try opening match pasting of Keynsham and a one try to nil defeat of the strong O2 Touch Me If You Can team along with 2-1 wins over Gylly Beach Touchers and Harwich & Dovercourt.

But they couldnt maintain their winning momentum drawing their opening two Cup games against both Chippenham Cheetahs and the O2 side without either side scoring a try.

And, while they finished the day unbeaten after a 2-1 win over East Anglian opponents Seckford Warriors from Suffolk and a solitary try defeat of Sandbach, they missed out on the overall title as the O2 side also remained unbeaten but only drew just the one game.

Wymondham skipper Gary Smith said afterwards: It was an amazing experience and an honour and a privilege to play at Twickenham. Our thanks to O2 for organising it and it was much appreciated by everyone and hugely enjoyable.

The Woodbridge RFC based Seckford Warriors also qualified for the Cup competition with Group 2 wins over Salisbury Samurai Subs, two tries to nil, Sandbach, 3-1, and a 4-1 trouncing of Plymouth Albion Oaks before losing 3-0 to Chippenham Cheetahs.

But they also lost their opening match of the Cup competition, going down to the O2 side, 2-1, before completing the double over Sandbach winning 1-0.

However they lost both of their remaining matches going down 2-1 to Wymondham and losing by the odd try to Chippenham Cheetahs, 1-0, to finish fourth overall.

There was, however, even more success for the Eastern Counties teams competing on the day when Harwich & Dovercourt topped the Plate competition.

They won their opening match with a 2-0 defeat of Salisbury Samurai Subs before drawing 1-1 against Gylly Beach Touchers. They then put three trys past Plymouth Albion Oaks in their third match to no reply before seeing off Keynsham, 2-1, in their final match.

It was fabulous, the three teams from Eastern Counties had a fantastic day at Twickenham, enthused the RFUs Eastern Counties Rugby Development Officer Lee Adamson. When I spoke to the Seckford Warriors the day after they were still buzzing about the great time they had at Twickenham.

The O2 Touch Rugby initiative has been a big success and all of the hard work these clubs have put in will provide a great platform to build on for next Summer.

The O2 Touch Rugby finals day at Twickenham ended the summer long campaign thats helped rugby union clubs across the country bolster their membership and proved an enjoyable and fun way for newcomers to become involved.

O2s Head of Sport Sponsorship, Nic Fletcher, says: "The O2 Touch programme is a nationwide initiative aimed at making touch rugby accessible to anyone over the age of 16.

Over 400 clubs across the country have already taken part over the summer, which means there is a club near everyone with touch rugby going on.

Touch rugby is a great opportunity for rugby and non-rugby players to play together, have fun and keep fit. It's been fantastic to see such a great response to the programme, and we hope the enthusiasm will continue.
